In the 5th century King Kasyapa built a sky palace on its summit, painted celestial maidens into its western face and laid out water gardens that still fill with the monsoon. Best Time to Visit and Climb
Sigiriya sits in the island's dry zone, so it is climbable year-round — but comfort varies enormously. The driest, clearest months run from December to April, with a second pleasant window from July to September. October and November bring the inter-monsoon rains; the gardens glow green but the frescoes gallery can close briefly in heavy showers.
Whatever the month, the best time to climb Sigiriya is the moment the gates open at 7am. The plains are still cool, the light on the lion's paws is soft and gold, and you will have the summit almost to yourself before the coach groups arrive around 9:30. The second-best window is after 4pm, when the heat breaks and the rock throws a long shadow across the water gardens — though you must be down before the 5:30pm close.
Our guests often climb Sigiriya at dawn, then watch the sunset from neighbouring Pidurangala Rock — the classic postcard view of the Lion Rock itself. Two climbs, one unforgettable day.
Allow 1½ to 2 hours for the round trip. The route climbs roughly 1,200 steps, including an open iron staircase past the frescoes and a final exposed flight beside the lion's paws. Wear grippy shoes, carry a litre of water, and leave the climb until another day if you are unsteady with heights — Pidurangala offers a gentler alternative.
Ticket Prices and Entry Requirements
Sigiriya is managed by Sri Lanka's Central Cultural Fund. Tickets are sold at the entrance office beside the main car park and, increasingly, online. Current prices:

Your ticket includes the water gardens, boulder gardens, frescoes gallery, Mirror Wall and summit, plus the excellent Sigiriya Museum near the entrance — worth twenty minutes before you climb. Prices are set in US dollars; we include your tickets when we book, so there is nothing to queue for at the gate.
Entry requirements: carry your passport (needed for the foreign ticket), dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered around the shrine areas, and note that drones are prohibited. Photography is welcome everywhere except inside the frescoes gallery. The site opens at 7:00am and closes at 5:30pm, with last tickets sold at 5:00pm.
How to Travel from Colombo to Sigiriya
Sigiriya lies about 170 kilometres north-east of Colombo — roughly 4 to 4½ hours by car via Kurunegala and Dambulla. A Colombo to Sigiriya day trip is possible, but it is a long day: you would leave the capital by 5am, climb in the late-morning heat and return after dark. We gently recommend against it.
Private car & driver
4–4½ hrs · door to door, stops at Dambulla cave temple en route. Our recommended option.
Train to Habarana
≈5 hrs to Habarana, then 30 min by car. Scenic, but timetables are limited.
Overnight stay
Stay in Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla and climb at dawn — the way it should be done.
The better plan is to make Sigiriya the first night of a Cultural Triangle circuit. Drive up from Colombo after a late breakfast, pause at the Dambulla cave temples, and arrive in time for a swim and a sunset at Pidurangala. Climb the fortress at 7am the next morning, and continue to Polonnaruwa, Minneriya's elephants or Kandy with the whole day still ahead of you.
