Sri Lanka is small enough to cross in a day yet packed with more variety than most continents — ancient rock citadels, cool tea country, leopards, and palm-fringed surf within a few hours of each other. This 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary is the route we recommend most often to first-time visitors from the UK: it follows the natural geography from the Cultural Triangle down through the hills to the south coast, keeps driving to a minimum and leaves the slowest days for the end.

The loop is roughly 650 kilometres in total. With a private chauffeur you will spend around fourteen hours on the road across the whole trip — never more than four in a single day — plus the six-hour train ride, which is the point rather than the price.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
- Day 1 · Colombo → SigiriyaMet at Bandaranaike Airport, morning drive to the Cultural Triangle via the Dambulla cave temples. Sunset at Pidurangala Rock.
- Day 2 · Sigiriya7am climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress with a licensed guide, then a slow afternoon by the pool and an evening village walk or Minneriya elephant safari (May–October).
- Day 3 · Sigiriya → KandySpice garden and the Matale hills en route; arrive in time for the 6:30pm evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth.
- Day 4 · KandyRoyal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, a private Kandyan dance performance and dinner above the lake.
- Day 5 · Kandy → Ella by trainReserved observation-car seats on the hill-country line; luggage travels ahead by car. Arrive Ella late afternoon for the Nine Arch Bridge crossing.
- Day 6 · EllaSunrise on Little Adam's Peak, a tea-factory tour and a picnic breakfast on the estate. Ravana Falls on the way back.
- Day 7 · Ella → Yala2½-hour descent to the dry-zone plains. Check in to a tented camp on the park boundary and take a late-afternoon game drive.
- Day 8 · Yala → MirissaDawn safari in Block 1 for leopards, then west along the coast to Mirissa for two nights by the ocean.
- Day 9 · MirissaWhale watching at dawn (November–April) or a stilt-fishermen sunrise at Koggala; afternoon in Galle Fort with sunset on the ramparts.
- Day 10 · Mirissa → ColomboSlow beach morning, then the Southern Expressway to Colombo for a crab dinner and a final night — or straight to the airport for a late flight.
Our guests fly overnight from London, landing at 1pm local time. The drive to Sigiriya takes four hours, so we time the first day around a late lunch stop and a gentle sunset — no sightseeing until you have slept.

Variations: 7, 12 and 14 Nights
7 nights
Drop Colombo and one Kandy night; fly in, Sigiriya (2), Kandy (1), Ella (2), south coast (2). Skip Yala or make it a day trip from the coast.
12 nights
Add a second safari night and a night in Galle Fort itself, or begin with a night at a Negombo beach hotel to recover from the flight.
14 nights
Add Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura at the start, or swap the south coast for Trincomalee and the east (May–September).
Families with younger children often trade the Ella Rock hike for a cooking class and the dawn safari for a mid-morning one; couples marking an anniversary usually add a third beach night. The bones of the route stay the same — that is what makes it work.
Practical Notes for UK Travellers
SriLankan Airlines flies direct from Heathrow to Colombo in around 10½ hours; Emirates, Qatar and Etihad offer one-stop options from regional UK airports. Sri Lanka is 4½ hours ahead of the UK in winter (5½ in British Summer Time), so jet lag is mild.
You will need an ETA visa (applied for online before you fly), six months' passport validity and standard travel insurance. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee; cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, cash is useful for tips and markets. Tap water is not drinkable — every hotel and car we use carries filtered water.

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you choose a route rather than trying to see everything. Ten nights comfortably covers the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill-country train, one safari and the south coast. The north, east coast and Sinharaja rainforest are best saved for a second visit or a 14-night trip.
