South-west monsoon
May – September. Rain on the west & south coasts and the western hills. The east is dry.
North-east monsoon
November – February. Rain on the east & north. The west, south and hill country are dry.

October and, to a lesser degree, April: short thunderstorms island-wide, usually late afternoon.
Monsoon rain in Sri Lanka rarely means days of grey drizzle. It arrives as heavy afternoon or evening bursts with sunshine in between, and the dry-zone heart of the island — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa — stays largely dry whichever monsoon is blowing. - MaySouth-west monsoon arrives on the west and south coasts: humid, afternoon downpours. Switch to the east — Trincomalee and Arugam Bay dry out. Vesak lanterns light Colombo.
- JuneWet in the south-west, glorious in the east. Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle remain dry and quiet. Good value for hill-country stays.

- AugustUK summer holidays: head east to Trincomalee, Passikudah and Arugam Bay for calm seas and surf, pair with Sigiriya, Kandy and Ella. The south coast is breezy with rough surf but often sunny between showers.
